Netflix Cancels ‘Mystery Science Theater 3000’ After Two Seasons

The Satellite of Love has gone dark at Netflix.

The streaming giant has cancelled Mystery Science Theater 3000 after two seasons, according to host Jonah Ray and creator Joel Hodgson.

The show – which featured a guy and two robots mocking terrible movies as you watched along – became a TV cult classic since its premiere on a local TV station in Minneapolis in 1988.

After its initial run on both Comedy Central and SyFy, the show went off the air in 1999. In 2017, however, a crowdfunding campaign led by Hodgson brought the show back from the dead, and it was picked up by Netflix.

After two seasons with Jonah Ray leading the show, however, Netflix has decided against bringing it back for a 13th season.

“If you didn’t see the backer update, I announced today that #MST3K is not doing a third season for Netflix,” Hodgson said on Twitter. “It’s not the end of MST3K, It’s just the end of the first chapter of bringing back MST3K.”

Jonah Ray also commented on the cancellation. “We don’t know what the future holds for the show, it always seemed to figure out how to survive,” he said in a series of tweets. “From Comedy Central to SyFy. Then kept alive by RIFFTRAX & Cinematic Titanic. whatever happens, I want everybody to know that getting a chance to be on this show was a dream come true.”

For now, the last two season of MST3K will remain on Netflix. Fans looking for a dose of original seasons of the show should check out the Pluto Free TV app, which includes an MST3K channel.
