BREAKING: Ricky Gervais Out as Golden Globes Host After Mocking Liberals
Comedian Ricky Gervais is out as host of the Golden Globes Awards, barely a week after he relentlessly mocked Hollywood’s liberal activism and “woke” culture.
At last week’s Golden Globes, Gervais joked that this would likely be his last time hosting the event, right before he ridiculed the celebrities and industry that were being honored. He said so, assuming his jokes would not earn him an invitation to host next year.
He was right.
Gervais earned rave reviews online from viewers who loved his biting, often off-color jokes aimed squarely at the Hollywood elite. Celebrity attendees at the event, however, were not amused by Gervais reminding them that they were friends with Harvey Weinstein and Jeffrey Epstein. Now, Gervais is being replaced – by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. The pair has hosted the Golden Globes three times before, and their outspoken feminism will go over far better with the Hollywood crowd than Gervais’ abrasive style. Fey and Poehler rarely rocked the boat as hosts, but did often mock Republicans and conservatives.
“There’s no denying that Tina and Amy’s comedic chemistry is infectious,” said Lorenzo Soria, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), said in an announcement to the press.
The HFPA, who organizes the Golden Globes, had been widely criticized by critics for allowing Gervais to put on a controversial performance, so they likely acted quickly to satisfy angry celebrities.
During the Golden Globes, Gervais mocked Hollywood’s hypocrisy, “woke” culture, and faux activism. “If you do win an award tonight,” he told attendees during the ceremony, “Don’t use it as a platform to give a political speech, you’re in no position to lecture the public about anything. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg.”
His other jokes didn’t win him any fans from attendees. “If ISIS started a streaming service, you would be calling your agents,” he said.
After making a Jeffrey Epstein joke, he said “I know he was your friend, but I don’t care. Had to make your own way on your own plane, didn’t you?”
He even hit Hollywood on a subject they don’t like to talk about: studio executive and sexual predator Harvey Weinstein. While talking about the movie The Birdbox, he said “(It’s) a movie about people who had to pretend like they didn’t see anything. Kinda like working for Harvey Weinstein.” He then pointed to the audience and exclaimed “You did it!”
Here is video of his opening monologue from the Golden Globes.
Ricky Gervais has not commented on the announcement. After it was made, however, he made a passing reference to his Golden Globe performance in a tweet thanking fans.
