Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is Getting a Comic Book – That Absolutely No One Asked For

Gird your loins, true believers: socialist Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is getting a comic book.

In an inexplicable moment of irony, trees are giving up their lives to produce the paper for a comic book about a politician pushing for a “New Green Deal” to save trees.

According to a report by Newsweek, Devil’s Due Comics is releasing “Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the Freshman Force” on May 15. The comic book celebrates the millennial socialist who has taken Washington by storm. Devil’s Due is the same publisher that created another politically-set comic, “Barack the Barbarian,” during the Obama administration.

The cover shows Ocasio-Cortez, wearing her signature white suit to symbolize “solidarity” with women, as she stands over a fallen red elephant, symbolizing the Republican party. In the background, a blue donkey (symbolizing the Democratic party) stands nervously watching, seemingly afraid of her “bold socialist feminism.”

The cover includes the phrase “new party, who dis,” referring to a tweet Ocasio-Cortez posted mocking Joe Lieberman, who criticized her tactics.

An alternate cover will also be sold, which depicts Ocasio-Cortez in a Wonder Woman-style outfit.

This particular piece of socialist propaganda won’t be free, however. Getting one will require a dose of capitalism: A single issue will cost $5.99, with the alternate cover costing $10. Signed copies are even more.

While some of the proceeds from the comic book’s sales will line the pockets of the creative elites who made it, a portion will be donated to the USO and to Raices Texas, an organization that provides legal assistance to immigrants and refugees.

The comic is the brainchild of artist Tim Seeley and Devil’s Due Comics owner Josh Blaylock, who said a number of comic creators were excited to participate in a comic book about their new liberal hero. Those creators included Hoyt Silva, Marguerite Dabaie, Dean Haspiel, Jill Thompson, Jose Garibaldi, Christa Cassano, Travis Hymel, Pat Shand, K. Lynn Smith, Kit Caoagas, Larry Watts, Bob Sikoryak, Adam McGovern, Nick Accardi, Shawn DePasquale, Elizabeth Marley Kim, Jason Goungor, Sherard Jackson, Peter Rostovsky, Jeffrey Burandt, and Sean Von Gorman.

“It’s no secret that AOC has become the unofficial leader of the new school, and has sparked life back into Washington and that’s reflected in the enthusiasm on display by the men and women contributing to this project,” Blaylock told Comic Book Resource.

Blaylock told HelloGiggles that the “kick in the butt the new Congress is giving to both sides of the aisle is so needed.”

The book comes at a time when the comics industry itself is in turmoil, as the two main publishers, Marvel and DC, have injected liberal politics and heavy-handed social commentary into their properties. The resulting backlash from fans has led to sharply declining sales and comic book shops closing in record numbers. The downturn comes even as comic book movies and merchandise generate record revenue.

This political split has even given rise to ComicsGate, a counter-culture movement in comics led by creators and fans who say conservative and libertarian viewpoints are being marginalized and even ostracized. They are pushing for more political and social inclusiveness in the industry, and less blatant activism, which they say is killing the pure joy of reading comics.

Ocasio-Cortez has not commented on the comic book, which is being made without her involvement or blessing.
