Johnny Depp Out as ‘The Invisible Man’ as Elizabeth Moss May Join the Cast

Universal Studios’ “Dark Universe” has suffered another setback, as Johnny Depp is reportedly out as the lead in the upcoming remake of “The Invisible Man.”

The report comes as producers are eyeing Elizabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) for one of the lead roles in the film.

According to a report by MovieWeb, Depp is no longer playing the lead role of Dr. Jack Griffin, whose formula for invisibility causes him to go murderously insane. Reportedly, the box office failure of Tom Cruise’s The Mummy in 2017 caused Universal to rethink the “Dark Universe” film series, which was due to include Javier Bardem in The Bride of Frankenstein and Depp in The Invisible Man. The Bride has been delayed, as producer Alex Kurtzman, who was to oversee the entire film series, has departed from the job.

Universal had previously released this photo of the actors who were to anchor the “Dark Universe,” Russell Crowe (Dr. Jekyll), Bardem, Cruise, Depp, and Sophia Botella (The Mummy).

With The Invisible Man moving forward without Depp, Universal reportedly is looking to bring in an actor that isn’t an A-lister, but would bring a fresh face to the role. Moss may end up being the more recognizable name in the cast.

MovieWeb reports.

Blumhouse is currently producing a reboot based on the classic Universal movie The Invisible Man, and the project is looking to sign on Elisabeth Moss to star. As previously announced, the upcoming movie will be written and directed by horror filmmaker Leigh Whannell. Perhaps best known for co-creating Saw with James Wan, Whannell has also helmed Insidious: The Last Key and Upgrade for Blumhouse. It’s noted that discussions are still in the very early stages, but if all goes well, Moss will be starring in the movie in a lead role. As of now, talks are still ongoing, and casting has yet to be made official.

It is not clear if Depp’s personal life had any effect on the decision to make a casting change. His drinking and erratic behavior had been covered by tabloid media, and he just filed suit against former wife Amber Heard after she accused him of domestic abuse.
