Is This ‘Rise of Skywalker’ Alien the Key to ‘Evil’ C-3PO?

Lucasfilm has released an image of a new alien, Babu Frik, as part of an announcement of a promotional partnership for The Rise of Skywalker.

However, hidden in the announcement was a detail about Babu that could solve one of the controversies from the latest Rise of Skywalker trailer.

Second only to the discussion of “Dark Side Rey” is the talk surrounding the “Red Eyes C-3PO,” who made a quick appearance in the trailer. It led to speculation that the protocol droid might “break bad” or even go to the Dark Side somehow.

However, the Lucasfilm description of Babu Frik included this little tidbit:

The tiny Anzellan droidsmith, first glimpsed in toy form during the Triple Force Friday livestream event, works among the Spice Runners of Kijimi and can reprogram or modify virtually any droid — regardless of the security measures protecting its systems.

Lucasfilm revealed that point for a reason. Now that we know Babu Frik is capable of reprogramming droids, it is now completely plausible that he is responsible for the “Red Eyes” C-3PO sports in the trailer. Even more interesting is that the recent Triple Force Friday livestream revealed that the C-3PO figure includes a Babu Frik figure, so the two seem directly connected.

This has led to speculation that C-3PO may not actually turn evil, but may have been reprogrammed into some sort of battle mode. We know that C-3PO isn’t programmed for fighting, and yet will use Chewbacca’s bowcaster in the new movie. Babu may be responsible for the change.

We’ll find out when The Rise of Skywalker opens this December.
