‘Good Place’ Actress: ‘My Life is More Important Than an Unborn Fetus’
An actress from NBC’s television show “The Good Place” is raising eyebrows with her profane Twitter rant on the abortion issue.
Jameela Jamil, who plays Tahani Al-Jamil on the show, made the controversial comments while defending an interview she gave Gloria Steinem for Harper’s Bazaar.
In the interview, Jamil claimed the right to abort a baby is a matter of personal liberty. She also appeared to claim that a newborn isn’t exactly alive yet, so mothers should prioritize their own life over the life of their unborn child.
“I’m someone who’s had an abortion, and I feel like I need to make sure that we prove it’s not always just emergencies. People have abortions, sometimes a woman just wants her liberty,” she said. “We have to normalize that it’s okay just to make that choice for yourself, because your life is as important as a newborn life that doesn’t even exist yet.”
Steinem took it a step further, stating that abortion was essential to democracy. Jamil agreed.
“It took me a while to understand that the first step in every authoritarian regime is controlling reproduction, and that means controlling us,” she said. “Unless we—men and women—have power over our own bodies and voices, there is no such thing as democracy.”
Jamil herself had previously said she had no regrets over having an abortion when she was young.
In May, while criticizing Georgia’s “heartbeat” bill, Jamil said “I had an abortion when I was young, and it was the best decision I have ever made. Both for me, and for the baby I didn’t want.”
Triggered By Online Criticism
After Jamil and Steinem were criticized for claiming abortion was essential for democracy, Jamil went nuts on social media. “My life *is* more important to me than an unborn fetus’…Suck on that,” she said.
Jamil received quite a bit of support online from abortion rights supporters. However, others questioned what type of person revels in making such proclamations in public.
The criticism against her tweet triggered Jamil once again, and she went on another profane rant against pro-lifers. “You care about fetuses,” she tweeted. “Once they’re out the womb, you don’t give a fuck.”
Twitter once again pushed back on Jamil’s assertion that pro-lifers don’t care about babies after they’re born.
After all of the backlash, Jamil didn’t seem to care, and instead insisted her abortion allowed her to become a happy millionaire.
Although “The Good Place” is ending on NBC, Jamil continues to host the show “The Misery Index” on TBS.
