Capt. Pike ‘Star Trek’ Series with Anson Mount Coming to CBS All Access (Announcement Video)

CBS All Access is giving us more “Star Trek,” with a series order of a “Discovery” spinoff featuring Captain Christopher Pike.

“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” is bringing back Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike, Rebecca Romijn as Number One and Ethan Peck as Spock.

In an announcement video for the series, Mount promised fans a “classic ‘Star Trek’ show that deals with optimism and the future.” That is good news for fans who feel the new “Star Trek” is a dark and cynical departure from Gene Roddenberry’s vision.

Fans unhappy with “Star Trek: Discovery” feel it has drifted too far from the classic “Trek” characters, look, themes and storylines. However, fans were far more receptive to the addition of Capt. Pike and his crew in season 2, even with some retconning of the Pike and Spock characters.

“Strange New Worlds” will follow the events aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise in the decade before Captain Kirk took command.

As many “Trek” fans know, Pike’s story arc is a tragic one, as was seen in the classic series and the “Kelvin Timeline” films by J.J. Abrams. “Discovery” has also alluded to his fate, although it seems to follow the same path as the classic series.

“Fans fell in love with Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn and Ethan Peck’s portrayals of these iconic characters when they were first introduced on ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ last season,” Julie McNamara, executive vice president and head of programming at CBS All Access, said in a statement. “This new series will be a perfect complement to the franchise, bringing a whole new perspective and series of adventures to ‘Star Trek.’”

Akiva Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet will serve as executive producers along with Henry Alonso Myers, Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth.

Goldsman also stated his excitement in helming the new series. “This is a dream come true, literally. I have imagined myself on the bridge of the Enterprise since the early 1970s. I’m honored to be a part of this continuing journey along with Alex, Henry and the fine folks at CBS.”

Kurtzman is in the midst of a five-year deal to oversee the “Star Trek” television universe for CBS.

Here is the announcement video, featuring Mount, Peck, and Romijn.
