Pimp Daddy Destro Returns to G.I. Joe Action Figure Line

The legendary “Pimp Daddy” Destro action figure is seeing new life, and this time, he’s bigger!

For those unaware of the legend of the infamous figure, you have to go back to 1997. A Destro action figure was “allegedly” released in the G.I. Joe action figure line in a “commemorative set” of previously-released figures with new paint schemes.

This particular Destro, however, sported a wild fuscia color with leopard print highlights, instead of the original black and red. Most collectors never saw the figure in stores, but loose figures began circulating on the secondary market soon after, and the rise of the internet made its existence widely known.

Because of the paint scheme, fans dubbed it “Pimp Daddy Destro,” and a legend was born.

Many assumed the figures were factory prototypes or custom made, but a website devoted solely to the legend, ProjectPDD.com, has revealed that it actually was a Hasbro release that made it to toy store shelves in limited quantities.

The crazy paint scheme was initially approved and a small run of the figures, both loose and packaged, were made for review by Hasbro. After seeing the final product, Hasbro changed course and reverted to a more traditional black paint scheme.

However, it is believed that about 100 of the packaged figures were already included in shipments to the United States when the decision was made. Loose figures meant for Hasbro were passed on to the secondary market, and collectors have been going wild ever since.

In 2007, Hasbro released a convention-exclusive Destro action figure with the “Pimp Daddy” paint scheme as a tribute, and a Funko Wacky Wobbler (their version of a bobble head) was a limited-edition exclusive for Entertainment Earth.

Now, with Hasbro releasing new G.I. Joe figures in a six-inch format as part of their “Classified Series” line, the infamous figure is getting a new version, with a release this fall.

Named “Profit Director Destro,” as Hasbro wasn’t going to actually use the term “Pimp Daddy,” this new six-inch tall version features the same colors and leopard print in all its garish glory.

Hasbro describes the figure saying “this Destro figure comes ready for action, with multiple points of articulation for high poseability and character-inspired accessories, including his signature sword. And with custom artwork by James White, the G.I. Joe Classified Series Profit Director Destro package will make a mark on shelves.”

You can pre-order Profit Director Destro from Hasbro Pulse by clicking right here. There is a limit of two per order and it is scheduled to ship October 1.
