Mike Trout Rookie Card Sells for Nearly $4 Million at Goldin Auction

A 2009 Mike Trout rookie card has sold at auction for $3.9 million, an unprecedented amount for a modern sports card.

The card was one of two that sold for over a million dollars at the Goldin Auctions 2020 Elite Auction, which concluded on Sunday evening. Nearly $14 Million in sales were generated from the 359 lots up for bid, with the Trout rookie and a LeBron James rookie card leading the way.

The 2009 Bowman Chrome Draft Prospects Mike Trout Superfractor Signed Rookie Card, numbered 1 of 1, sold for a record-setting $3,936,000. That’s more than the $3.12 million a bidder paid in 2016 for a 1909 Honus Wagner T-206 card.

The card was owned by gambler-turned-sports card investor “Vegas” Dave Oancea, who bought the card two years ago for $400,000. Oancea bought up multiple rare Trout cards in recent years, and with the Angels outfielder’s outstanding seasons since then, demand for his rookie cards has reached historic levels.

A second card sold for over $1 million in the same auction, a 2003/04 Upper Deck “Exquisite Collection” Rookie Patch Autograph LeBron James Card (#02/99). With a final bid of $1,107,000, the LeBron card sale marks the first time two million dollar items sold in the same Goldin Auction.

“We are thrilled that our Inaugural Goldin Elite Auction generated such interest. It was the highest revenue producing auction in our history we will be doing one again in the coming months,” Ken Goldin, the founder of Goldin Auctions, said in a statement. “We are currently accepting consignments for the next one and looking forward to seeing what comes through the door to highlight our next sale.”
