Toy Company NECA Ignores Memorial Day, Celebrates Pride Month a Day Later

Memorial Day 2021 was celebrated by most as a day of solemn remembrance and celebrations with family. Someone, however, forgot to remind NECA.

The popular toy company, which makes action figures and collectibles for adult collectors, has an active presence on social media. On Monday, May 31, the company posted two updates: one promoting an upcoming Frankenstein action figure, and another promoting their upcoming collector dolls of horror icons Chucky and Tiffany.

No mention was made of Memorial Day or its significance.

On Tuesday, June 1, however, NECA celebrated the first day of Pride Month with a post on Instagram supporting the LGBTQ community.

While most comments on the post were generally supportive, some questioned why Memorial Day received no mention, especially when it had occurred just the day before.

In the past, NECA has acknowledged other holidays like Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, but has not generally posted about patriotic holidays like the 4th of July, Veteran’s Day, or Memorial Day. Still, many felt the slight was magnified because the Pride Month post came the very next day after most Americans celebrated a day off to honor America’s fallen.

NECA did respond to some comments about the absence of recognition for Memorial Day, telling one commenter “definitely love for those who have served” after a mention of a lack of love for lost veterans. In another response, NECA told a commenter “we hear you completely and honor those who have sacrificed for us. We will continue to grow, learn, and acknowledge.”

Even NECA’s post about Pride Month earned criticism, with many commenters saying it was just another example of corporate pandering in order to sell products.
