William Shatner, Captain Kirk Himself, Is Finally Going to Space
William Shatner is finally heading to the final frontier: outer space.
The actor who played Capt. James T. Kirk on Star Trek in film and TV is joining Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin space flight in October. If he does make the scheduled trip, the 90-year-old will officially be the oldest person to ever go into space.
TMZ broke the story on Friday afternoon, stating that he will be a member of the second Blue Origin crew to take the New Shepard space capsule. TMZ reports that his flight may be filmed as part of an upcoming documentary. Discovery reportedly passed on the project, but discussions with other production outlets continue.
It’s been 15 years since Shatner played Kirk, voicing him in a 2006 video game, and over 25 years since he played him on-screen in Star Trek: Generations.
More from TMZ:
It’s unclear who will be joining William on the flight, but they’ll join elite company as some of the first few amateur astronauts in space. You’ll recall, when Bezos went up, up and away in July … he was joined by just his brother, Mark Bezos, test pilot Wally Funk and recent HS grad Oliver Daemen.
That crew reached an altitude of 66.5 miles, floated around for a few minutes in zero-gravity while playing with ping pong balls … then made their way back down for safe landing.
