WATCH: Is The New ‘Scream’ Trailer a Big Misdirection?

The newest entry in the Scream series is coming early next year, and we have the first trailer that gives us a look at what’s to come. Or does it?

Although the film is titled Scream, it is not technically a reboot, as it is a direct sequel to the first four films, with some of the original actors returning. With a number of new, young cast members, however, it appears this film will be a “passing of the torch” to a new generation. If you’re looking for clues in the trailer, however, the directors warn you can’t believe everything you see.

Set twenty-five years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, the film follows a new Ghostface killer who begins targeting a new group of teenagers, exposing secrets from the town’s deadly past. Actors Neve Campbell (Sidney Prescott), Courteney Cox (Gale Weathers) and David Arquette (Dewey Riley) all reprise their iconic roles, and are joined by new cast members Melissa Barrera, Kyle Gallner, Mason Gooding, Mikey Madison, Dylan Minnette, Jenna Ortega, Jack Quaid, Marley Shelton, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Sonia Ammar.

With the passing of original director Wes Craven in 2015, the new film is directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who warn the trailer is intentionally filled with misdirections. Bettinelli-Olpin told Bloody Disgusting “One of the things we’re happy with is that anything that you might think is a spoiler in this, there’s a good chance you’re wrong. There are misdirects within the movie. There are misdirects within the trailer. For us, that’s just the fun of the whole thing to make this a big whodunnit. Spoilers suck, but the fun as fans is to talk about who might be the killer. Then to go through it forensically to try and find out and see if you can win the game, basically.”

There have also been reports that fake scripts were made, and additional scenes were shot just to mislead internet spoilers.

Whether any of this is true, or is a misdirection itself, remains to be seen. The trailer seems to show one of the film’s new actors being killed, which is surprising, but could be the misdirection they are speaking of. Here’s the trailer, so you can speculate all you want.
