Mark Hamill Mocks Adoption in Tweet, But Fans Strike Back

Mark Hamill’s latest tweet is proof that he spends way too much time on the social media platform without using a little common sense. After making fun of people seeking to adopt, he saw a significant backlash from his own fans. He was also reminded of a recent scandal in which he pressured his son’s girlfriend to abort his first grandchild.

The Star Wars actor often posts bad political takes on Twitter, but after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, ruling that only the states can set legislation on abortion, Hamill went off. After a string of sarcastic tweets criticizing the ruling and the Supreme Court, he took aim at the millions of people hoping to adopt, characterizing them as psychotic DC Comics villains the Joker (whom he voices in numerous cartoons and video games) and Harley Quinn. “We will adopt your baby,” he wrote with an image of the characters, echoing a popular phrase from potential adoptive parents.

Over 100,000 children are adopted each year, but hundreds of thousands of potential adoptive parents remain waiting for a child each year. With abortions numbering around a million each year (exact numbers are not known), there has been a social movement to encourage pregnant mothers to choose adoption over abortion. Thousands of organizations nationwide work to support pregnant mothers and facilitate adoption, which is often a lengthy, difficult process. And yet, Hamill saw fit to mock those willing to adopt.

The responses to his tweet came fast and furious, calling out Hamill for his callous, insensitive mockery, just to make a point on abortion. Many were actual adoptees.

Some criticized Hamill’s idea that adoption is a terrible idea, and abortion is somehow better.

Perhaps the best response pointed out that Hamill’s signature role, Luke Skywalker, was an adopted baby.

Some then reminded Hamill that several years ago, a woman came forward claiming that she was the former girlfriend of his son Nathan. Maegan Chen says that he and his parents Mark and Marilou pressured her to abort the baby, which would have been their first grandchild. Chen said that when she became pregnant with Nathan’s child in 2016, the Hamills would make appointments for her to get an abortion without her consent. The family then threatened to cut her off if she didn’t abort, with Mark Hamill saying she shouldn’t bring a child into the world “that nobody wants.” They told her they would not support her baby financially and even threatened to take the baby and make her pay them child support.

Chen kept the baby and gave birth to a girl, Autumn, later that year. She broke up with Nathan before the baby was born, and she has no contact with the family since. “It’s hard, but it’s going to be the best thing you’ve ever done,” she says to women choosing to keep their child rather than aborting it.

Mark Hamill has never commented on the situation or his granddaughter.
