Mickey Mantle Rookie Card Breaks Auction Record as Most Valuable Sports Collectible Ever

A 1952 Mickey Mantle rookie card set a new record for sports collectibles by selling for $12.6 million at auction on Saturday night.

The card, graded by SGC as a 9.5 Mint+, is the finest known specimen of the 70-year-old baseball card known to exist, was sold by Heritage Auctions to an unidentified bidder. The card came from a historic 1986 find of like-new 1952 Topps baseball cards by Al “Mr. Mint” Rosen, the hobby’s premier card dealer.

This video by Heritage Auctions, was used to promote the auction.

The card sold for nearly twice the previous record for a card, a vintage Honus Wagner tobacco card that sold for $7.25 million. It also broke the record paid for any piece of sports memorabilia. Just a few months ago the jersey worn by Diego Maradona when he scored the “Hand of God” goal in the 1986 World Cup sold for $9.3 million.

In this YouTube video, Al Rosen discusses the find of the 1952 Topps cards in the 1980s.
