Netflix Reveals Their Most-Watched Content – and ‘Stranger Things’ is NOT #1
Netflix never reveals how many viewers are watching their programming, but they have revealed their top ten most-watched movies and shows for 2019. And the list includes a few surprises.
Not only is “Stranger Things” not the most popular title on Netflix, the streaming service revealed a very odd metric for measuring views.
In a post on LinkedIn, Netflix listed their top content, and mentioned how they measure viewership. According to the streaming service, a title is considered viewed if a viewer watches for at least two minutes. For their “top ten” list, rankings were based on viewers watching at least two minutes of a title within the first 28 days.
Given Netflix’s automatic play feature, lots of people could technically “watch” a title inadvertently. That may explain the ranking of some of their content, particularly number one, but it may not be a true indicator of what viewers watched start to finish.
While “Stranger Things” Season 3 is listed at #2, Netflix’s #1 title for 2019 was actually Murder Mystery, the Adam Sandler/Jennifer Aniston Netflix original comedy.
Although Murder Mystery was popular for a time, it stands to wonder if they benefited from the “two minute” rule.
Only one of the top ten titles was a non-Netflix Original production: The Incredibles 2. The service’s high-profile offerings, including Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman and Michael Bay’s 6 Underground were among the most-watched titles.
The top ten list is as follows.
- Murder Mystery
- Stranger Things 3
- 6 Underground
- The Incredibles 2
- The Irishman
- The Witcher
- Triple Frontier
- Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile
- The Umbrella Academy
- The Highwaymen
