HBO’s ‘Watchmen’ Won’t Get A Season Two
HBO’s hit series “Watchmen” won’t be getting a second season, after the show’s creator has announced he is leaving the production.
Damon Lindelof confirmed to USA Today that he is not interested in doing a second season of the DC Comics superhero series. HBO programming chief Casey Bloys confirmed with several news outlets, including USA TODAY and The Hollywood Reporter, that Lindelof would not return, and HBO would not continue without him.
Last year, Lindleof told The Hollywood Reporter that he wouldn’t do a second season of the critically acclaimed series unless they had the right idea for a plot. “I don’t think I’m interested in, nor do I think the audience is interested in, ‘Let’s just do more of the same,'” Lindleof said at the time. “Because then it wouldn’t be Watchmen. It requires a new idea. Maybe that idea is going to come from someone else. I would welcome that, one hundred percent.”
Lindleof, who also created HBO’s “The Leftovers,” also co-created ABC’s “LOST,” and seemed intent on preserving the creative integrity of “Watchmen,” even if that meant ending the series.
Bloys said that Lindleof “brilliantly took this graphic novel and just kind of broke it open and created a whole new world.” The show starred Regina King, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jean Smart, and Jeremy Irons. It is based on the Alan Moore graphic novel released in 1987.
Bloys said “It’s really in Damon’s thinking about what he wants to do. If there’s an idea that excited him about another season, another installment, maybe like a ‘Fargo,’ ‘True Detective’ (anthology) take on it, or if he wants to do something different altogether. We’re very proud of ‘Watchmen,’ but what I’m most interested in what Damon wants to do.”
Lindelof, who wrote and produced the series, did tell USA TODAY that he has “given my blessing” to HBO to continue the show with someone else in charge.
Bloys, however, has nixed that idea. “It would be hard to imagine doing it without Damon involved in some way,” he said.
