YOU’VE BEEN WARNED: ‘Space Jam 2’ Starring LeBron James Has a Release Date

90s kids are about to have their childhoods ruined, as LeBron James is officially coming to desecrate the memory of the classic film Space Jam.

According to a report in Variety, Space Jam 2 will hit theaters July 16, 2021. That announcement comes just days after LeBron James said the animated/live action hybrid will start filming this summer. We assume that will be after James and the Lakers are knocked out of the playoffs.

The proposed sequel, with James in the lead, has been met with resistance from fans of the original film. With James a far more polarizing sports figure than Michael Jordan was, the response to the sequel has not been overwhelmingly positive.

James had previously teased the film with this image posted to social media.

Terence Nance is directing , with Ryan Coogler (Black Panther, Creed) producing.

Space Jam 2 has been in development since at least 2015, when James and his company, SpringHill Entertainment, signed a deal with Warner Bros. Since then, there have been some changes to the creative team, including having Justin Lin drop out as director. Lin is now producing the film.

It is not known if Space Jam 2 will feature other NBA stars besides James. The original Space Jam, released in 1996, featured Michael Jordan and NBA stars Charles Barkley, Larry Bird, Patrick Ewing, and Muggsy Bogues, among others. A number of current NBA stars, however, have expressed interest in appearing.

In the original film, Jordan teamed up with Bugs Bunny and a number of Looney Tunes characters in a galactic basketball game against a team of aliens called the “Monstars.” The plot to the sequel is not yet known.

Skip Bayless has weighed in on the announcement, slamming James in the process.
